EP. 37 MASTERING TECHNIQUES & FACING YOUR MAKEUP FEARS
MAKEUP LIVE EPISODE 37 WITH JAMES MOLLOY & PARIS CHANEL
From mastering precision liner to walking into a room full of people you’ve never met, being a makeup artist comes with challenges that go far beyond the makeup itself.
For Episode 37 of MAKEUP LIVE, James Molloy was joined by model and beauty creator Paris Chanel for an open conversation about mastering makeup techniques, building confidence and facing the fears that come with working in the beauty industry.
Inspired by James’s recent Huda Beauty campaign, where every detail needed to be perfected without relying on retouching, the episode explored the importance of technical skill, the right tools and learning to trust yourself as an artist.
MEET PARIS CHANEL
Joining James for Episode 37 is Paris Chanel, a model and beauty content creator based between Liverpool and London. Known for her beauty and lifestyle content, Paris brings her personality and experience in front of the camera to this week’s conversation.
Throughout the episode, Paris opens up about building confidence in the modelling industry, embracing her individuality and learning to be comfortable being herself.

MASTERING THE ART OF FLAWLESS SKIN
James began by sharing his approach to creating a flawless, camera-ready complexion, explaining why skin preparation is just as important as the makeup applied on top.
Using Fenty Skin Fat Water to hydrate the skin, James highlighted the importance of preparing the complexion before working with fuller coverage products and powders.
For Paris’s complexion, he mixed two shades of Huda Beauty Easy Blur Foundation before perfecting the under-eye area with Huda Beauty #FauxFilter Concealer and Easy Bake Loose Powder.
Using his 143 – MY SOFT POWDER BRUSH alongside MY ‘ON POINT’ BLENDER, James demonstrated how different tools can completely change the finish of your powder application. The flat edge of MY ‘ON POINT’ BLENDER allowed him to create a precise, lifted under-eye shape, while the softer brush helped diffuse the edges for a seamless finish.

His biggest advice? Don’t be afraid of powder. With the right skin preparation and application technique, powder can create a beautifully perfected, velvety complexion without looking heavy or dry.
PERFECTING YOUR EYE TECHNIQUE
Moving into the eyes, James recreated a softer interpretation of the sculpted, lifted eye makeup he’d recently created for Huda Beauty.
Using his MY SIGNATURE EYE & DETAIL BRUSH SET, James demonstrated how brush shape, density and pressure all contribute to the finished result.

Beginning with the 225 – MY SHEER BLENDER, he softly mapped out the eye before gradually building definition with the 223 – MY BLENDER, 241 – MY SMOKY CREASE and 251 – MY SOFT SMUDGE.
James reflected on how blending darker eyeshadows was something he struggled with earlier in his career. Rather than starting with the darkest shade and attempting to blend it away, he learnt to reverse the process, beginning with lighter shades and gradually building structure.
For liner, James reached for the 264 – MY TIGHT LINER, demonstrating how a gentle stamping motion can create precise definition at the lash roots without dragging or pulling the eye.
The biggest takeaway was to break down technical makeup into smaller stages. Whether you’re perfecting a blend or creating a winged liner, building gradually gives you more control and confidence.
MASTERING THE PERFECT LIP
One of the standout techniques from the episode was James’s demonstration of the 501 – MY PERFECT LIP BRUSH.

James explained that achieving a perfectly balanced lip was something he’d previously found challenging, which ultimately inspired him to design a brush that would make the application easier.
With a flat edge for defining the corners and a curved edge for shaping the Cupid’s bow, the 501 allows you to work in smaller sections rather than attempting to create the entire lip shape in one movement.
Using Danessa Myricks Colorfix in a deep chocolate brown shade, James demonstrated how to create a beautifully crisp, defined lip without needing a separate lip liner.
Whether you’re mastering a classic red lip or working with deeper colours, understanding the shape of your brush can make all the difference.
FACING YOUR FEARS BEYOND THE MAKEUP CHAIR
But this episode wasn’t just about mastering makeup techniques.
Throughout the Live, James and Paris discussed the challenges that come with working in the creative industry, from stepping onto a new set to meeting clients for the first time and learning to feel comfortable in unfamiliar environments.
James reflected on his experience working with celebrity clients and how important it is to remember that you’ve been booked for a reason. Walking into a room with confidence, introducing yourself warmly and creating a comfortable environment for your client are all part of becoming a successful makeup artist.
Paris also opened up about her experiences in modelling, sharing how she initially felt pressure to fit into a particular image or personality. Over time, she realised that embracing her individuality and natural personality was what helped her stand out.
Their conversation was a reminder that confidence doesn’t mean becoming someone else. It’s about learning to trust your abilities and being comfortable with who you are.
James also shared an important piece of advice for those moments when something isn’t going to plan. Whether it’s a liner that isn’t quite right or a lip that needs adjusting, sometimes the best thing you can do is step away, focus on something else and return with a fresh perspective.
THE CONFIDENCE TO KEEP LEARNING
From perfecting the smallest details of a makeup application to navigating new opportunities and unfamiliar environments, Episode 37 was a reminder that every artist faces challenges throughout their career.
The right tools and techniques can help you master your artistry, but confidence also comes from experience, practice and learning to trust yourself.
Whether you’re a professional makeup artist or simply love makeup, don’t be afraid to challenge yourself, develop your skills and, most importantly, own who you are.
